What are the differences between brand-name drugs and generic drugs?

You can use Vantage America card to get discounts on most FDA approved prescription drugs. You will save 5%~15% for brand drugs and 15%~40% for generic drugs. There are no limited drug lists, no waiting periods.

Brand-name drug is a drug sold under a specific name that is protected by patents that prohibit others from selling the same drug. During this period of patent protection, only the company holding the patents can manufacture and sell the brand-name drug.

After patents protecting the brand-name version end, other companies are allowed to produce and sell a generic version of the drug, they are called generic drugs. According to United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements, a generic drug must use the same active ingredients and has same dosage, strength, safety, route of administration, quality, and clinical benefits as its brand-name version. FDA requires generic drugs to have the same quality as the brand-name drugs, so they are safe to be taken.

Brand-name drugs are more expensive than their generic counterparts because drug companies have had high costs of upfront drug research and development, including clinical trials to ensure the safety and effectiveness of new drugs. Generic drug manufacturers don't face the same new drug development, testing and marketing costs,  they can make the generic version of drugs in lower price.
