Medical treatment in the United States is of high standard.  However, health care cost in the U.S. is the most expensive in the world. Doctor visits cost an average of $200. Where to go for medical care?

In the U.S., health care is mostly provided by private hospitals and clinics. When you’re feeling sick or are injured, it is advisable to choose an appropriate healthcare facility depending on the severeness of medical condition and the potential cost. 

Hospital Emergency Rooms can treat patients with severe and life-threatening medical emergencies. They open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. ER visits are very expensive in the U.S. Visit an emergency room if the patient has serious medical problems e.g. difficulty breathing, unconsciousness, heavy bleeding, chest pain, major accident, etc.

Urgent care centers can treat urgent, but non-life-threatening emergencies.  Go to a Urgent Care Center if you have an urgent medical condition that needs immediate attention, e.g. urinary tract infection, vomiting, strained ankle etc. Usually you can visit an urgent care center without appointment.

If you have a doctor’s prescription, you can present the prescription to a licensed pharmacist in the pharmacy store. The pharmacist will prepare and fill the prescription, and explain to you how to take the drug, its dosage, and possible side effects etc. you are free to choose a pharmacy to buy medicine.

How to find a health facility to get treatment and pay medical bills?

Atlas insurance does not restrict your right to select the hospital, physician or other medical service provider. You can go to a doctor or hospital of your choice. You are not required to obtain a pre-approval before you visit a hospital or doctor. There's no need to get referrals to see a specialist. 

PPO Network providers

PPO providers have agreement with HCC-MIS to send your medical bills directly to the insurance company for payment. Out-of-network Providers

You are free to choose a healthcare provider outside the PPO networks for medical treatment. Out-of-network hospitals and clinics set up their own fee schedules, you may incur additional out-of-pocket costs. 

Usually out-of-network medical providers don’t bill the insurance company directly. You will pay your medical treatment at the time of service,  then file a claim to Tokio Marine HCC-MIS Group to request for reimbursement  of eligible medical expenses that are covered by your insurance policy. How to use Atlas America insurance?

Always carry your insurance card with you while traveling. The insurance ID card has your name, insurance certificate number, insurance company’s emergency phone number. When you seek medical treatment in the U.S., you will be asked to show proof of medical insurance.  Hospital or clinics may also require you to provide a photo ID (e.g. passport) as proof of identity. 

If you have any significant medical conditions like allergies, medical history/ problems, as well as any recent or current medications, you should inform the doctor or other medical staff. This will be helpful information for your health care providers to make informed treatment decisions.
