Dentists treat teeth, gums, and other related oral diseases. They provide preventive care such as comprehensive dental examination and tooth cleaning, treat dental problems e.g. filling, root canal, crowns, bridges, teeth extraction, oral surgery etc. U.S. Dentists usually have DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degree. They are board-certified and provide high quality care.
There are over 90,000 dentists and dental specialists in the U.S.. Most dentists work in their private practices. Many large hospitals have dental clinics that are open to the public. There are some public dental clinics that are run by local or state government health departments that provide dental care to low income people in the communities.
Usually you need to call the dentists or dental clinics to make an appointment. For urgent cases (e.g. severe toothache, chipped tooth, tooth abscess etc), many dentists will take an emergency at short notice, sometimes patients can be booked in for treatment the same day or the next day.
There are some walk in dental clinics that take patients on a first come first serve basis, you don’t need to make appointment, just walk in and wait for your turn.
Dental clinics usually are open around 8am to 5pm during the week , many dentist clinics are open on Saturday as well. Very few dental clinics open on Sunday. The opening hours vary by clinics. Outside of dental clinics’ normal business hours , most clinics have an emergency number for dental emergencies. When you call after hour, the clinics’ answering machines can provide emergency dental clinics’ information or instructions.
There are some specialized urgent dental centers that are staffed with dentists and dental specialists to provide comprehensive dental care ranging from preventive dental cleanings, filling, tooth extraction to cosmetic therapy. They have extended opening hours, e.g. from around 9am to 9pm, seven days a week. Urgent dental centers can take patients by appointment, or patients can walk in and wait for your turn to be seen.
Most hospital emergency rooms do not have dentists on staff to provide comprehensive emergency dental care. For patients with common dental problems who show up in the ER, doctors may prescribe painkillers or antibiotics to temporarily alleviate symptoms, but they will refer you to visit a dentist during their normal open hours to resolve the underlying dental problems. For patients with severe dental situations or oral injuries, hospital emergency rooms will contact their on-call emergency dental specialists to arrange immediate treatment.
Dentists are free to set up their own rates. Depending on your specific dental problems and difficulty of treatment, the costs may vary. For example, filling a cavity may cost $50 ~ $300, pulling a tooth may cost $75 ~ $300, a basic dental examination by a dentist may cost $50-$150. Before you make an appointment, you can contact different dentists’ offices to find out and compare the estimated costs of treatment.
